London's Best Massaman Curry

You don’t need to travel all the way to Thailand to taste a good massaman curry. A southeast Asian staple, here are our top three places to get your fill in town. 


Begging Bowl

Peckham is rife with great eateries, and one of the best is the Begging Bowl, on Bellenden Road. The menu changes regularly, and features innovative Thai dishes on rotation to keep things interesting. If the massaman curry is on the menu when you go, order it. The rich, thick, coconut-laden duck curry is the stuff of dreams, and comes finished with a sprinkling of peanuts and a dollop of quince, to cut through the richness of the meat.

Nipa Thai

Nipa Thai was bestowed two AA Rosettes and the prestigious ‘Thai Select’ award from the Thai government not so long ago, and are a close second in the bid for the best massaman curry award in London. The curry here was rich, fragrant and unbelievably moorish - a dangerously tasty combination that sees you drinking the leftover gravy with a spoon. One criticism: while the lamb was tender, it could’ve been a little less fatty.

Busaba Eathai - arguably one of London’s best chain restaurants, and founded by culinary entrepreneur Alan Yau - make a banging massaman curry. The sauce is completely addictive, and after we had gobbled up all of the succulent duck meat, we were practically licking it out of the bowl.
