London's Best Souvlaki

Never tucked into a souvlaki? You’re missing out. This classic Greek street food is quick, simple and piquant, containing hunks of marinated meat, juicy tomatoes, creamy tzatziki and more, all stuffed into a fluffy, lightly warmed pitta bread. Sound good? Here are the best in London.

Winner:

Hungry Donkey

Rustic, hefty and uncompromisingly authentic, the chicken souvlaki at the Hungry Donkey is – after careful consideration - the deserving winner of our 2015 souvlaki edit. The pitta is thick, buoyant and comes gently warmed, before being stuffed with succulent pieces of chicken and a generous dollop of zingy tzatziki. Order with a side of the spanakopita and you'll be in Greek paradise.

Contender:

Suvlaki

New to Soho, Suvlaki is championing proper Athenian cuisine one wrap at a time. The restaurant's speciality is its name, so don't order anything else. Our favourite was the lamb souvlaki: tender chunks of flavoursome slow-cooked lamb comes piled into a fluffy pitta and topped with all the staples. Yum.

Nissi

If you can be bothered to travel to the far North of London, head to Nissi in Palmer's Green. The souvlaki, and everything else on the menu, is about as authentic as it comes. Try the pork souvlaki (among other dishes) which is perfectly porky, tender and topped with fresh tomatoes, and homemade tzatziki that is so good you could probably just drink it.
