A good sausage roll is the best thing in the world; stuffed with a fist full of super high quality pork, peppered with ample seasoning, coated with a thick layer of flaky, chewy, buttery pastry and served slightly warm with a massive blob of ketchup, there’s simply nothing better.
Winner:
The Ginger Pig
A clear winner. The Ginger Pig’s sausage roll is a king among snacks. Simply seasoned with sage, salt, black pepper and mixed herbs, the amount of meat (taken from the Ginger pig butcher’s very own pigs) held within the fragile casing of pastry is simply staggering. Avoid eating for at least four hours before you have one, you’ll be pleased you did.
The Balham Bowls Club’s sausage rolls are sublime. The pastry – slightly translucent and with a meaty taste all its own – is chewy and salty, while the porky filling is delicious, and seasoned with pistachio and apricot. They are small puffs of porky goodness that are not nearly as fist-like in form as the other two on the list. If you spot one on the bar, order quick, they don’t stick around for long.
Massive, these. The rolls are big piles of buttery porcine goodness, with sprinklings of oregano, nutmeg, sage, rosemary, wholegrain mustard and lemon zest. The best thing about this is the salty Devonshire free range pork within, served wrapped in golden flaky puff pastry.
